It was another strong month for stocks, both U.S. and foreign, as well as bonds. They posted solid gains in August. Nearly all sectors were up except for Utilities. Mid- and Small-Cap stocks rallied, possibly due to the run-up in Large-Cap stocks for the year, as investors become leery of Large-Cap valuations and look for better pricing elsewhere.
The two best-performing sectors in August were Health Care, up 0.47%, and Financials, up 0.43%. There does seem to be a rotation happening not only out of Large-Cap stocks but also out of Growth and into Value, as the S&P Enhanced Value index was up 7.28% for the month, and the S&P Growth was up 0.83%
Bond prices got a lift with the expectation of a 0.25% rate cut by the Fed very soon. All eyes will be on the next FOMC meeting, scheduled for September 16-17. Producer Price Index numbers will be reported on September 10, and Consumer Price Index on September 11. Both help measure inflation in the economy.
